The civil trial for Dr. Ebony Parker has concluded.
She was found liable for $10 million to be paid to victim and teacher, Abby Zwerner.
During the trial, one line kept being repeated:
“No one could have ever imagined a six-year-old shooting their teacher.”
That statement bothers me deeply.
If someone tells you a six-year-old child might have a gun, the very first thought any responsible person would have is—I need to go get it from him right now because he could shoot himself or someone else.
It’s the sole reason we would never let a child that young have a gun.
Because they’ll hurt themselves or someone else!
How is that not foreseeable?
The lesson here isn’t about blame.
And this case was never about imagination.
It was always about action.
Many warnings were given. Opportunities were there to prevent it.
The difference between tragedy and prevention came down to one simple choice: do something or do nothing.
And the right thing wasn’t done.
When safety depends on your response, hesitation is always the wrong decision.
Every warning is a moment to act. Every delay, a risk you can’t afford.
What saves lives isn’t policy or paperwork. It’s a person who stands up, walks out of the office, and acts before it’s too late.
Be that person!
