Saving Lives, Cultures, and Careers Before it's too Late

2-Day School Violence Prevention Leader Course

Before the Heartache

Every school is living in one of two times.
Before the heartache or after the heartache

This 2-day advanced school leadership professional development is about keeping you—your school, and your people—on this side of that line.

Before the heartache.

Once that line is crossed, there is no reset.
No rewind. You’re forced to deal with all that painfully remains.

To make sure that it isn’t you—or those you love and lead—you’ll gain advanced violence prevention skills, ready-made materials, and one-on-one support to help you save lives, cultures, and careers before it's too late.

There’s too much at stake to play small, boring, or typical.

If the typical school safety approach was going to work, it would have worked after 26 years.

The current school safety model is good, but it’s too narrow and the results too limited. It’s time to take everything good from it and make it great

Before the Heartache does just that.

It gives you a direct countermeasure to preventing the next shooting—and the ability to end bullying, disruptions, disrespect, and burnout. Those smaller, daily, destructive behaviors that slowly poison culture, erode trust and learning, and end careers long before they should.

Before the Heartache isn’t the same old stuff.
It's holistic school safety. And a fundamental shift in how you lead, engage, and prevent school violence.

Participants are certified as Safe & Loved Practitioners, equipped with proven, positive, and effective tools to lead with purpose and confidence—when it still matters.

Before the Heartache

7 Principles & Course Details

Principle #1

Effective and proven.

The success of Before the Heartache is built on the Safe & Loved school safety approach—an innovative, field-tested system shaped by more than six decades of proven violence-prevention success and refined specifically for schools.

It’s not theoretical. It works.

Safe & Loved has been credited with preventing school shootings, earning standing ovations from educators, and inspiring teachers and law enforcement officers to postpone retirement—not once, but routinely.

John, Director of School Safety, New York

“I’m writing to say THANK YOU, because your presentation helped us to prevent a potential school attack at our high school. I know we are not impervious to future issues, but your training prevented this situation from being an event.”

Before the Heartache gives you this level of safety—and this level of impact as a leader.

Principle #2

Direct countermeasure.

We know everything about school shooters.

There are no mysteries.

  • 75% happen during early morning
  • 100% follow the same attack pattern
  • 70% are current or former students
  • 94% show warning signs at school
  • 90% walk in through an open door (majority front doors)
  • 41% happen after a break (suspension, expulsion, other)
  • 100% are acts of targeted violence
  • 10% fight their way in

Every element of Before the Heartache is built to give you the ability to quickly and accurately implement the 4 Threat Pillars to Identify, Assess, Prevent, and Survive this threat——before it can happen.

Principle #3

Powerful, but non-obtrusive.

To stop violence and unwanted behaviors, you must enhance 4 things:

Engagement.
Supervision.
Access Control.
Territorial Reinforcement (ownership).

Every school safety success—large or small—can be traced back to the quality of E-SAT. Every failure can be traced to its absence.

You’ll learn how to use E-SAT to make small, powerful but subtle shifts in the environment, student flow, and staff routines that improve safety, behavior, and relationships.

Because E-SAT blends seamlessly and easily into the school day, it doesn’t raise alarm or damage culture.

Most people don’t even notice it working.
They just feel calmer. Safer. More connected

Look closely.
Can you see where it’s working?
Can you spot where it’s missing?

If it wasn't clear in some of the images, that's okay.
After this training, you'll recognize and be able to implement E-SAT anywhere.

Including how to:

  • Prevent the next shooting
  • Dramatically increase engagement
  • Reduce vulnerability to violence
  • Answer any safety question
  • Reduce unwanted behaviors—big and small
  • Blend prevention into every interaction
  • Read, shape, and control school environments
  • Make safety daily and self-running, not a yearly drill
  • Give every staff member a clear, effective role
  • Make students, teachers, and parents feel safe and loved
  • Apply E-SAT in any school, at any level
  • Help teachers protect and connect at the same time
  • Increase staff retention and gratitude

Principle #4

Influences all behaviors.

Before the Heartache, together with Safe & Loved, influences  all behavior, all the time

Not just the extreme moments that make headlines, but the daily, smaller behaviors that determine trust, burnout, and whether people will follow you.

That’s by design.

It functions like a protective net over the entire school—helping you reduce, mitigate, and eliminate all behaviors that harm students, erode culture, and drain time, energy, and credibility.

Smaller concerns handled early stops larger ones from ever taking hold, ends resentment, and saves careers from ending before they should.

Dr. Kathy Wolcott, Wayland-Cohocton CSD, NY

Our district has struggled with the rate of long term suspensions for students with disabilities, which has required us to work a bit closer with NYSED and take a deeper dive into our data.

Last week, I shared that our long term suspensions for students with disabilities went from 15 in 2021-2022 to 4 in 2022-2023.

When they asked me what we did, because they were shocked by the reduction, I explained that we didn't do anything different with how we responded to behavior and discipline; however, I shared how we were working to embrace the principles of your Safe and Loved approach to school safety, focusing specifically on engagement.

I know that we have room for improvement, and we are going to continue to work on improving our ESAT, but honestly, I can't think of anything else that we did that would have amounted to such a significant reduction. Thank you!!

Principle #5

Sends a clear, powerful message.

Everything you do—and everything you don’t do—sends a clear and powerful message.

It’s like shouting into a bullhorn telling everyone whether:

  • You’re an easy target or hard target
  • You allow unwanted behavior—or you don’t
  • You’re vigilant and watchful—or you’re not
  • You care—or you don’t

Students see it. Staff see it. Parents see it.
And so do bad actors.

with Before the Heartache, you gain the ability to send a clear, visible, and unmistakable message—one that works both ways.

To your school community—we care and we’ll protect you.
To threats—don’t even try.

We are not an easy target.

Principle #6

Brings everyone and everything together.

Safety that ignores culture is limited.
Culture that isn’t strengthened by safety is vulnerable.

In Before the Heartache, you learn how to use E-SAT, intentional engagement, and environmental design as a total school safety approach—one that brings everyone and everything together, especially culture.

When safety is culture-deep, it stops being the responsibility of a few and becomes the daily practice of all.

Safety grows stronger and self-running.
Your job gets easier and more rewarding.

This is how you stay before the heartache.
Everyone and everything working together—for each other.

Principle #7

Earns you praise and trust.

Praise and trust are more than good feelings.
They're operational tools for safety.

Before the Heartache blends trust into every engagement.

When trust is high, people engage more, follow willingly, and speak up earlier—before issues escalate into something irreversible.

When everyone can see—and trust—that you know what you’re doing, confidence rises. That confidence earns praise, strengthens credibility, and that strengthens safety.

8 Violence Prevention
Leadership Safeguards

These safeguards focus your thinking, strengthen your response, and keep you grounded in what matters the most—people.

You'll learn these inside and out.
