New. Better. Safer. Exciting. Total.

Safe & Loved is a total school safety program that ensures that schools receive the help and resources they need to create an environment where every student and staff member feels Safe & Loved.

Safe & Loved is the only school safety program that consistently and repeatedly garners standing ovations from teachers! We get standing ovations because our approach to school safety is new, effective, inspiring, holistic, and 100% teacher-focused. Educators love Safe & Loved because we treat them not as a problem, but as what they truly are—the greatest safety asset a school has.

Safe & Loved blends simple, yet proven, violence prevention techniques into every positive student engagement. This innovative approach equips and uplifts educators, inspiring and empowering them to take an active role in preventing violence and school attacks.

How it works:

If you want to prevent a school attack and save lives you must be able to effectively and consistently identify, assess, prevent, and survive a threat!

Safe & Loved will ensure you can do all four...and so much more!

Features Included:

  • We’ll spend at least 5 full days in your school.
  • The first day onsite, we’ll get to know your school by assessing current strengths and identifying areas for improvement.
  • We'll create action plans that we can use to focus our efforts to fully implement Safe & Loved.
  • The second day onsite Don will work one-on-one with your counselors and your threat assessment team to ensure they possess the necessary skills to quickly and accurately assess whether a student poses a danger and the ability and materials to progress them to a safer place.
  • Each school will receive the Assess & Progress student safety program as well as all the procedures, materials, and worksheets.
  • Ongoing Support: Throughout the duration of the project, counselors will have direct access to Don for any questions or assistance they may need while conducting student safety assessments.
  • Each month we'll connect to discuss progress, address concerns, and adjust action plans as needed.
  • Third day onsite: Don will work one-on-one with your principals, School Resource Officers (SROs), and other key leaders to implement recommendations from the action plans as well as to problem-solve any issues or concerns.
  • Any day that Don and his team is onsite, Don will accomplish the following:
  • 1. A progress review of achievements made and goals accomplished.

    2. Assess, modify, or create new action plans.

    3. Provide one-on-one problem solving for remaining concerns and issues.

    4. Offer immediate improvement strategies and more personalized support.

    5. Deliver a detailed leader debrief at the end of the visit.

    6. If desired, conduct an evening presentation for parents.

    7. Present to the BOE (if not possible in person then by zoom).

  • The fourth day onsite is for one-on-one with your teachers and staff members to better understand and implement the principles of Safe & Loved.
  • The final day onsite is a review, assessment, and certification day.
  • Schools meeting the Safe & Loved Standards will receive:

    1. Certification as a Safe & Loved School.

    2. Recognition at your main entrance announcing your school as a Certified Safe & Loved School.

    3. Placement on the Safe & Loved Wall of Honor.

    4. Social media announcement drafts to help you highlight your achievements.

    NOTE:

Schools will have the opportunity to receive certification as a Safe & Loved School. This certification recognizes schools that have reshaped their environments to be safer and more engaging.

    Standards for Certification

Your action plans will include the Safe & Loved standards. Once these are met, your school will be designated as a Certified Safe & Loved School.

    Support and Resources

We provide essential guardrails, suggestions, and materials to assist you in meeting these standards, especially if they are not already included in your action plans. This support will ensure a smooth path towards achieving certification.

  • Additional training opportunities will be made available for teachers and key leaders to review, learn, and master the critical points of Safe & Loved.
  • Because each school has different needs, responsibilities, and pressures, the program is specifically designed to be extremely flexible.

    We’ll go at your speed!

Safe & Loved Promise

I promise you that if you fully implement Safe & Loved, your school will be safer, better, more successful, and as a leader, you'll be more confident, capable, and valued

I promise I'll work side-by-side with you to achieve it, and together, we can create an environment where every student and staff member feels safe & loved!

Our district has struggled with the rate of long term suspensions for students with disabilities, which has required us to work a bit closer with NYSED and take a deeper dive into our data.

Last week, I shared with them that our long term suspensions for students with disabilities went from 15 in 2021-2022 to 4 in 2022-2023. When NYSED asked me what we did, because they were shocked by the reduction, I explained that we didn't do anything different with how we responded to behavior and discipline; however, I shared how we were working to embrace the principles of your Safe & Loved approach to school safety, focusing specifically on engagement.

I know that we have room for improvement, and we are going to continue to work on improving our ESAT, but honestly, I can't think of anything else that we did that would have amounted to such a significant reduction. Thank you!!

Kathy
Director of Pupil Personnel & Special Services

Don’s insight in developing relationships between students, staff and community is a unique perspective on violence prevention. Since his visit to our district, real change has occurred.

Staff is more visible, students are noticing and there is a real tangible feeling that our buildings are not only safer, but more welcoming and more supportive.

Jamie
Assistant Principal

In my 40 years in education, I've never seen a speaker get a standing ovation from teachers!

Carol
Superintendent

Don has the unique ability to make you understand the gravity of the situation without heightening anxiety. He provided the district and the schools with valuable information about our strengths and areas that needed improvement. Most importantly, he provided solutions that were easy to implement, have made the buildings safer, and have improved the student experience.

Karen
Director of Elementary Education

I learned a lot from Don. I liked him immediately. He has a great way of explaining things to you so that you do not feel like you have been doing things the wrong way. The outcome of his visit has been that my school is safer. There also exists an even better positive climate! I didn’t think that was possible but I was wrong. I would highly recommend asking Don to assess your school. You will not regret it!

Molly
Principal

As a district leader, I'm on the outside looking in and I've seen (and felt) a marked difference. Our principals, teachers, and staff have embraced Safe & Loved, especially with the morning arrivals. They enjoy greeting our students, parents, and other relatives at morning dropoff and it is impacting the culture of the building...for the better.

It was a simple and commonsensical move that has made a big difference. At first, I sensed some reluctance about 'putting more on the plates' of our teachers, but all have embraced this new role.

Andrew
Assistant Superintendent

We'll show you how to reshape your school environment

We utilize the internationally recognized and proven violence prevention strategy known as Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED pronounced “Sep-ted”) of which Don Shomette is a national practitioner, instructor, and expert.

CPTED was created in the 1970’s during similar times of extreme community, racial, and civil unrest. CPTED was designed by social anthropologists so the average person could make themselves safer without relying only on the assistance of law enforcement. CPTED allows people to positively reshape their environment in simple unobtrusive ways that enhance their quality of life by pushing out unwanted behaviors such as crime, violence, and conflict.

CPTED has been warmly embraced by families, schools, businesses, communities, and organizations across the world and will be thoroughly applied in this project.

We'll make sure that through the recommendations in the Safe & Loved Safety Plan, personal coaching, and continued support that your school will be able to utilize and implement CPTED long after the project is completed!
